The
Nurturing Program is a 14-week parenting program, which includes both parents
and children (ages 4-12). The program is 2 ½ hours weekly. The parents and
children meet separately with their group facilitators for 2 1-hour sessions.
Parents, children, and facilitators come together for 1/2 hour of snack and
activities. This time allows facilitators to educate group members on healthy
snacks and fosters playtime with parent and child. As the parents are
learning that parenting is not instinctive but learned, and learning new
techniques while changing old behaviors, the children will also be learning
the same techniques and changing behavior at the same time. The
main philosophy of the program is NO HITTING OF ANY KIND. Group members will
learn about behavior management, self-esteem, child development, and empathy.
Parents will learn to use praise for behavior they like to see and they will
learn about time outs, ignoring behavior, and choices/consequences for
behavior that is not acceptable. Children are taught these same principles;
they are just learning it in a different way. Children learn through games,
art, group discussion, role-playing, and use of puppets. Parents are taught
using group discussion, videos, homework, and use of their parent manuals. The
cost of the program is $10/session and $15 for the parent handbook.
Some scholarship and grant money is available to help defer costs to
participants. Groups are typically run once in the fall and spring. Contact Information: Robert Rogers - Supervisor
