Halcyon House is a 10-bed Emergency Shelter for both male and female residents  ages 10 through 17.  The program has been operated by Youth and Family Services, Inc. since 1978. Halcyon House is located in a renovated rural farmhouse at 627 Middle Road in Skowhegan , Maine . The program operates 24-hours per day, 365 days per year providing food, shelter, counseling, referral and placement to Maine’s neediest children.

Referrals are received from local law enforcement, parents, Maine State Department of Human Services and Corrections, area school officials, and other public and private children's service providers. The parent or legal guardian must give consent prior placement. The Maine State Department of Human Services licenses the program. Children served are from all over the state of Maine with an occasional out-of-state placement.

Children are served on a first come-first serve basis. An appropriate referral is a child between the ages of 10 through 17 who cannot remain in their own home or current placement for reasons of child abuse (physical or sexual), neglect, family violence, substance abuse (by self or other family members), or a child who runs away.

Children may stay up to 30 days, unless an extension is granted, while more permanent placement plans are made. During that time, the child will receive instruction in life skills through participation in household cooking, cleaning, chores, etc . The residents presently attend a classroom at the local high school, and the younger residents are sent to the Junior High or Middle School. The school plans any educational field trips while recreational field trips are carried out by the Youth Workers.  Counselors from the main agency conduct a weekly substance abuse group, as well as provide substance abuse counseling and mental health counseling at the shelter.  Case Management services are also being offered at the shelter in order to better assist the referring agents.
